With a background in spoken word poetry and writing sick nasty raps, I approach copywriting with an arsenal of tools, treating each new piece as a monster needing to be tamed.
If graphic design is a battle against uglyness, copywriting is a crusade against superficiality. If you want to talk about something and have it be heard and internalized by your target audience, you have to have lived what they have lived. There are method actors, but there are also method advertisers. I live what I write, because only then I can know that I truly mean it. If you were given 15 seconds to say something that would be heard by millions, wouldn’t you want it to mean something?
